So how do you get more traffic to your website?
Having a website is much like having a shop: no-one’s going to know you are there unless you tell them. You may get the occasional passer-by, but you’ll get so many more through the door if you advertise. Leaflet drops, bill boards, roundabout signs, radio, local directory listings and magazines, it all helps to get people looking at your website.
Use social media
Social media is a great marketing tool giving you the potential to reach a large target audience. Every time you post or share a link back to your website you are opening up a new gateway to your website that possibly thousands of people can see.

Search engines still play a major role in getting your website found. Make sure that your web pages are well optimised for the keywords you want to target, make the most of your image alt tags and make sure you have good meta titles and descriptions, but what’s more, make sure you have well written engaging content that is relevant to what your company actually does.
Target long tail key-words
Long tail key words are, like the name suggests, longer more specific key words phrases. For example ‘Try Web Cloud’ is one of our keywords. A longer tail would be ‘Ecommerce Web Designers for Picture Framers near York’. Because this is a more specific phrase you are already going to have less competition. With voice searches becoming more frequent we are going to see a shift towards targeting these long tails or more conversational keywords. See our blog post on Voice Search.
Firstly, we always say “if you don’t have the time to put into a blog, don’t start blogging”! A blog with nothing on it or one that is out of date can look worse than no blog at all, as it makes your website look neglected and out of date. If you do have the time to commit to a blog, it’s a great way to encourage traffic to your website. It’s important to recognise that this doesn’t happen by you just having a blog, you have to create content that people want to read, and what’s more important, content that people want to share or link to, which creates more ways for people to find your website.
Share your content
Make sure you share the content that you create. We’ve already mentioned social media, but don’t forget email and other media. Create a monthly email to your customers, how about a sign up form on the website so you can reach potential customers who you know are already interested in what you do or make.
Create link bait
Make content that people want to link to, perhaps look at creating a blog (as described above), offer something for free, create how to guides, or write an article that gives good advice.
Implement schema microdata
Adding microdata to your website might not increase traffic but it does make it easier for search engine bots to find and index your pages.
Links play an important part in how your website performs in the search engine results pages. Gaining good quality links back to your site from other websites helps to lift this, but the internal linking structure of your website also comes into play. Make sure you keep a look out for internal linking opportunities within your website, it not only helps your SEO but makes for a better user experience.
Have a responsive website
If your website isn’t set up to look its best on whichever device it is being viewed on this creates a negative user experience and so the user is far more likely to go elsewhere. Probably to a site that is easier to use and navigate. This increases the bounce rate (visitors who immediately leave) for your website, which affects your position in the search engines and makes it a less likely subject for sharing on social media.
Make sure your website is fast to load
As we’ve mentioned people hate to wait. Having a site that is slow to load means that your visitors will go somewhere else.
Incorporate video content
Video is a valuable asset in making your website more engaging. Visual information is often easier to digest and retain, making video a great way of getting and holding your visitors’ attention.
Research the competition
Keeping an eye on the competition is always a good idea. Take a look at the type of content they are producing, see what gets the most engagement then try to emulate this content on your own website.
